Ceremony

Ceremony

Ceremony

Tayo, a young Native American, has been a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, and the horrors of captivity have almost eroded his will to survive. His return to the Laguna Pueblo reservation only increases his feeling of estrangement and alienation. While other returning soldiers find easy refuge in alcohol and senseless violence, Tayo searches for another kind of comfort and resolution.

Tayo's quest leads him back to the Indian past and its traditions, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual, a curative ceremony that defeats the most virulent of afflictions -- despair.

Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism

Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism

Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism

Bestselling author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, James W. Loewen, exposes the secret communities and hotbeds of racial injustice that sprung up throughout the twentieth century unnoticed, forcing us to reexamine race relations in the United States.

In this groundbreaking work, bestselling sociologist James W. Loewen, author of the national bestseller Lies My Teacher Told Me, brings to light decades of hidden racial exclusion in America. In a provocative, sweeping analysis of American residential patterns, Loewen uncovers the thousands of “sundown towns”—almost exclusively white towns where it was an unspoken rule that blacks could not live there—that cropped up throughout the twentieth century, most of them located outside of the South. These towns used everything from legal formalities to violence to create homogenous Caucasian communities—and their existence has gone unexamined until now. For the first time, Loewen takes a long, hard look at the history, sociology, and continued existence of these towns, contributing an essential new chapter to the study of American race relations.

Sundown Towns combines personal narrative, history, and analysis to create a readable picture of this previously unknown American institution all written with Loewen’s trademark honesty and thoroughness.

The Cyclist and His Fifth Woman: Two Plays by Vijay Tendulkar

The Cyclist and His Fifth Woman: Two Plays by Vijay Tendulkar

The Cyclist and His Fifth Woman: Two Plays by Vijay Tendulkar

These two plays by the legendary Vijay Tendulkar are a critique of Indian society and the reality surrounding the playwright. Once intended to be his last play, The Cyclist is a skilfully crafted, uninterrupted, single piece about the adventure of life told through a cyclist's journey. Apart from being a journey in geographical terms, it is a psychological exploration of the protagonist's mind. His Fifth Woman, a prequel to Tendulkar's Sakharam Binder (1972), brings to play the injustices and inequalities suffered by women in the man–woman relationship. The exploration of death and the afterlife is replete with humour and insight. These two plays are a welcome addition to the theatre lover's collection, and, as highly theatrical pieces, will be of interest to theatre actors, directors, and students.
